Contractor Growth Weekly — Week of August 17, 2026

This week, we're going after work that most of your competitors aren't even looking for.

This week's strategy: Find the visible problem before the customer starts looking for a contractor.

Most contractors market to people who are already looking for someone.

This week, we're going to flip that around.

Instead of waiting for someone to post “Looking for recommendations…”, spend some time actively looking for properties that already have an obvious problem you can solve.

If you're a pressure washer, look for dirty storefronts, sidewalks, dumpster pads and commercial entrances.

If you're in landscaping, look for overgrown properties, neglected beds and commercial properties with poor curb appeal.

If you're in excavation or drainage, look for washed-out driveways, standing water, clogged ditches, erosion and failing drainage.

If you're a roofer, painter, tree company, junk removal company or handyman, do the same thing within your trade.

Here's your assignment this week:

Pick one service you want more work for.

Then spend an hour driving through the areas where you want to work.

Don't drive around aimlessly.

Look specifically for visible problems related to that service.

Write down the addresses of 10–20 properties that could genuinely use what you do.

Then research the property.

For a residence, you can leave a professional door hanger or mail a short introduction.

For commercial properties, find out who owns or manages the property and contact the decision-maker.

Your message doesn't need to be complicated:

"I was working in the area and noticed ________. We handle this type of work regularly, so I wanted to introduce our company in case you're interested in having someone take a look at it."

That's it.

You're not begging for work.

You're identifying a problem and offering a solution.

Take it one step further.

If you land one of these jobs, don't immediately leave the area when you're finished.

Look around.

There may be 20 other properties nearby with the exact same problem.

Take good before-and-after pictures and use the completed project as credibility when approaching the next prospect.

One job can become an entire neighborhood, shopping center or commercial area if you pay attention.

Your goal this week:

Find 20 properties with a problem you can solve and make contact with at least 10 of them.

Don't measure this week's success only by how many jobs you immediately sell.

You're creating opportunities that didn't exist before you went looking for them.

One More Thing: Does Your Website Help You Win the Job?

You can do everything right to get someone's attention, but there's a good chance they're going to look your company up before calling.

What do they find?

That's why Contractor Growth Weekly is brought to you by Built for Contractors.
