THE COMPETITOR ADVANTAGE WEEK
Most contractors never study their competition.
That's a mistake.
Your competitors are showing you exactly how they get customers.
This week, you're going to use that information to improve your own business.
OBJECTIVE
By the end of this week you will:
understand what your competitors are doing well
find opportunities they're missing
improve your online presence
create a list of ideas to implement immediately
STEP 1 — FIND YOUR TOP FIVE COMPETITORS
Go to Google.
Search for your primary service.
Examples:
"Pressure washing near me"
"Excavation contractor near me"
"Junk removal near me"
Write down the first five companies that appear.
STEP 2 — STUDY THEIR GOOGLE PROFILE
Look at each company.
Ask yourself:
• How many reviews do they have?
• What photos are they posting?
• How often are they posting updates?
• What services are listed?
• What questions are customers asking?
Don't copy them.
Learn from them.
STEP 3 — VISIT THEIR WEBSITE
Look for things they do well.
Then look for what they DON'T do.
Questions to ask:
Can I immediately tell what they do?
Do they show before-and-after photos?
Do they explain their services clearly?
Do they make it easy to contact them?
What could I do better?
Write down five ideas.
STEP 4 — READ THEIR REVIEWS
This may be the most valuable step.
Read both the 5-star and 1-star reviews.
The 5-star reviews tell you what customers love.
The 1-star reviews tell you what frustrates customers.
Those complaints are opportunities.
If customers complain that competitors don't answer the phone...
Answer yours.
If they complain about communication...
Communicate better.
STEP 5 — IMPROVE ONE THING
Pick ONE improvement.
Examples:
✓ Better photos
✓ Better service description
✓ Faster response time
✓ More detailed estimates
✓ Better follow-up
Don't try to improve everything.
Improve one thing every week.
STEP 6 — WRITE YOUR COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE
Finish this sentence:
"Customers should hire my company because __________________."
If you can't answer that in one sentence...
Neither can your customers.
Write it down.
Use it in your marketing.
THIS WEEK'S LESSON
Your competitors aren't your enemy.
They're free market research.
Every review, every website, every photo, and every customer comment teaches you something.
Pay attention.
DO NOT THIS WEEK
❌ Copy another company's website.
❌ Copy another company's prices.
❌ Bad-mouth competitors.
❌ Assume they're successful by accident.
EXPECTED RESULTS
By the end of this week you should have:
✓ A better understanding of your market.
✓ At least five new ideas.
✓ One meaningful improvement implemented.
✓ A clearer message about why customers should choose you.
FINAL THOUGHT
The contractors who improve the fastest aren't always the best operators.
They're the best students.
Spend one hour studying your competition this week, and you'll probably learn more than you would by watching ten marketing videos.
